Moyie is an unincorporated community in the Kootenays, East Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Crowsnest Highway, Highway 3, 19 miles (30 km) south of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Cranbrook on the eastern shore of Moyie Lake. Once known as Grande Quete, the origin of Moyie's name is, via the Moyie River, river of the same name, thought to be the French (language), French word mouille, meaning wet. History Moyie was developed in 1897 by Glencairn Campbell, who purchased the property and subdivided it into lots. Lot sales were brisk as the Canadian Pacific Railway completed a tote road that allowed twice weekly stagecoach service from Fort Steele, while another tote road from Kootenay Lake was completed that November. It was predicted that Moyie would have a prosperous future and the CPR's new sternwheeler Moyie (sternwheeler), ''Moyie'', launched in 1898, was named for the town. The ''Moyie'' is a paddle steamer sternwheeler that worked on Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, Canada from 1898 until 1957. After her nearly sixty years of service, she was sold to the town of Kaslo and restored. Today she is a National Historic Site of Canada and the world's oldest intact passenger sternwheeler. A replica of the Moyie currently runs in Heritage Park Historical Village in Calgary. It does seasonal runs in the Glenmore Reservoir. History The ''Moyie'' was built in prefabricated sections in Toronto, Ontario and was originally intended for service on the Stikine River as part of an "all Canadian" water and rail route to the goldfields during the Klondike Gold Rush. Moyie Lake is a small, narrow kettle lake in southern British Columbia, located along the Moyie River. While building the Crowsnest Pass Railroad, this was the hardest part to build the tracks.
